In the card shop, we might find that love is all about hearts and flowers. In the Bible, we often find that a call to love is coupled with a call to obedience.
We can find this in the Old Testament. For example, in Deuteronomy 10:12: And now Israel (or put in your own name), what does the LORD require of you? He requires only that you fear the LORD your God, and live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul.
We also find this in Daniel 9:4: O Lord, you are a great and awesome God! You always fulfil your covenant and keep your promises of unfailing love to those who love you and obey your commands.
If we want to see the same thing in the New Testament, we need look no further than the words of Jesus in John 14:15: If you love me, obey my commandments. This is reiterated in the letters of Paul, for example in Romans 13:8: Owe nothing to anyone - except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbour, you will fulfil the requirements of God's law.
The Bible tells us that there is no option to pay lip service to God about loving him or loving others - we actually have to be committed to doing it.
How can you do just that today?
