Here’s
how it works: you draw up a list of forty names and write them on slips of
paper. You can do this as an individual,
as a couple or as a family.
The names
should include a mixture of people in your world: family members, relatives,
neighbours, friends, teachers, colleagues, and random strangers (e.g. somebody
on the bus or train, or in a shop, or on the way to school, or who serves you
coffee every day). It is fine to put in
people whose names you don’t know – or to just write “a random stranger” – God
knows their names. The names are put
into a special container.
Every day (except Sundays, as these aren’t counted as
part of Lent) you draw a name from the container – you can pray together as you
do this. The name that is drawn becomes
a focus for that day and you then choose how to love that person and see what
God can do through you.
